We are open from the Easter (24th March 2018) to the end of September. Advanced booking is required.
This depends on a number of factors, but our maximum is 11 persons. This limit may be reduced depending on location, conditions, ages and weight distribution of your group. We will advise at time of booking. For groups of 8 or more, or if there are young children in your group it may be necessary to utilise the third seat in one or more canoes.
As a guide the minimum age for canal experiences is 5 years and 10 years for the river / lakes. All children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Disabilities and Learning Difficulties
Let us know if anyone in your group has a disability or learning difficulty. We will do all we can to make a canoe experience possible and enjoyable for you.
Let us know if you have any medical conditions that could effect you during a canoe experience. Remember to bring any medicines with you (for example asthma inhalers etc).
All equipment is provided. Canoes / Paddles / Buoyancy aids.
You need to wear suitable clothes for the weather.
If it is cold / wet bring warm clothes and waterproof jacket and trousers (we can lend ponchos).
If it is sunny and warm a sun hat and sun screen is a great idea.
Wetsuits are not required for this type of canoe experience as you should not end up in the water. However! On rare occasions people do fall in and for this reason you should bring a towel and a complete change of clothes. We provide waterproof containers to keep your things dry!
For the Bude canal training shoes or similar are ideal.
For the lakes and river you will need to step into the water to get in and out of the canoes. In addition the river can be muddy. Wellington boots / wetsuit boots are great if its a bit chilly. If its warm, water shoes or old trainers are fine.
Bare feet or flip flops are not suitable for your own safety.
Food & Drink
On 2 and 3 hour experiences you should bring some snacks and a drink.
On 4 hour and full day experiences you need to bring plenty to drink and eat (snacks and packed lunch).
On 3 and 4 hour experiences we provide everyone with a small packet of sweeties at the halfway point.
On full day trips we provide you with a hot drink and a slice of homemade cake during the lunch stop.
At the lakes it is unlikely that you will need to lift the canoes. At the Bude Canal you will need to help portage the locks on 3 hour plus experiences. On the River Torridge experience you will be expected to help load and unload the canoes from the vehicle.
Canoe experiences take place in most weather conditions. However, if high winds or heavy rain is forecast we may cancel. In which case we can reschedule or give a full refund.
Just let us know if you are planning on bringing your dog canoeing. It is important that your dog is well behaved and can sit relatively still for the duration of the experience.
REMEMBER!! Bude Canoe Experiences take place at various locations, but NOT at our base in Holsworthy!
